How to estimate a concrete driveway

The formula

A driveway is a slab, so volume is length × width × thickness. Because driveways carry vehicles, thickness and reinforcement matter more than for a patio — get those right before estimating cost.

  • Volume = length × width × thickness.
  • A standard car driveway is 4" (100 mm); add depth for heavier vehicles.
  • Cost combines material, delivery and placement — adjust the rates above.

Worked example

A two-car driveway, 40 ft × 20 ft at 5 inches:

  1. Volume = 40 × 20 × (5÷12) = 333 ft³ = 12.3 yd³.
  2. Add 10% waste → 13.6 yd³ (10.4 m³).
  3. At $140/yd³ material that's ≈ $1,900 in concrete alone.

About 13.6 cubic yards (10.4 m³) — right at the threshold where on-site batching gets attractive.

Recommended driveway thickness

  • Cars / light vehicles: 4" (100 mm).
  • Heavier vehicles, RVs, trucks: 5–6" (125–150 mm).
  • Add wire mesh or rebar, and contraction joints every ~10 ft.

Slope, sub-base and waste

  • Grade the sub-base for drainage (≈ 1–2% slope away from buildings).
  • Compact a 4 in granular sub-base before pouring.
  • Order 10% extra — uneven sub-base eats volume quickly.
